What President Obama means to me...

...it means that my children can look to the man who leads the most powerful country in the world and see someone who lookes like them
...it means that the color of my family is The Face of The Country

...that racism might...just might be on it's way out

...that just a few years ago, I wasn't even legally allowed to marry my husband...now I can be married to him..and one day, everyone will be free to marry whomever they love...regardless of sex or color

...that past experiences like these
1. visiting an apartment for rent with my daughter, and liking it and wanting to rent it, and going back with my husband only to have the door slammed in our face and a man yelling "it's been rented!!"

2. going to the grocery store with our 4 young children and loading up the grocery cart..only to have the cashier say "Is this with food stamps?"

3. going out to our car early in the morning and seeing nigger written on it

4. my son coming home and saying, " Her parents won't let her date me cuz I'm too Black"

5. my daughter having her hair pulled as a young girl, to see if it was "real", and having people ask her, "WHAT are you?"

6. seeing my football playing son passed over for a scholarship application because he's not "Black enough"

7. family members refusing to talk to me or even meet my children because of the color of my husband's skin

8. having other family members say "you know, those "White People" but then look at me and say, "Oh I'm not talking about you."

9. being called a nigger-lover or my husband accused of being an Uncle Tom and marrying a "Cracker"

...that all of these experiences were not in vain. That they will be far distant memories that one day we will laugh about.

...that society will finally see that we are all Human Beings, with the same thoughts and feelings and wants and dreams, and should be treated equally

...that I can look my sons in the eye and say "Yes, you CAN be anything you want to be...even President. of the. United States.

...that we finally have someone in office who inspires the people instead of scaring them

...that one day, when I'm old and gray (or grayer!), my grandson can say to me, "Remember MiMi when Obama won the Presidency? And we've had a Hispanic and an Asian and even a GAY president since then?!!"

...that maybe my daughter, the Teacher, will finally be appreciated for what she is doing..molding the young minds and lives of our future leaders

...that my children can marry anyone...whatever color..and no one will think twice about it or say, "Oh, you're marrying a White Guy?" "You only date White girls?" "What's the matter with the Brothers? they aren't good enough for you?"

...it's about being able to hold my head up high and say "I'm PROUD to be an American"

...that I am alive to see history made..that my children are a part of History

...that maybe my grandchildren won't have to worry about society's view of "mixed" kids..that they CAN be smart AND be good at sports...that they CAN get a good job and not live on welfare..that they CAN be married to just one person and not have Baby Mamas all over the place..that they CAN be productive giving members of society who have something to offer

...that they can be PROUD of who they are without fear of condemnation

...that the stories of Black Men being dragged behind trucks and killed will be far far behind us

...that they don't have to be afraid of someone having a noose hanging from a tree in their yard

...that my cousin, who was my Best Friend, and died of AIDS, that he could have married and had a family, just like he wanted

...that maybe one day, I won't have someone ask me, "Why does it always have to be about race?"

...it's about VALIDATION

DAMN - this post is a deja vu for me - I swear to the highest that I read this before - either in a dream or in a past life but I could almost recite your words before I read them....GOD BLESS YOU BETH and GOD BLESS AMERICA - as a white looking hispanic I KNOW in my way what you are talking about -I am white outside and deep brown on the inside and no one sees my insides....

Well said. Let's hope and pray that this man can bring this country together and make it great again. He's got a tough road ahead of him - we didn't get here overnight, I just hope that he can make the change we desparately need.

Don't get your hopes up just yet. He's yet to do ANYTHING for you. Only promises, and those are made to be broken.

Wow, anon...he's not even in the White House yet. Before you start throwing accusations you should let the man get a day under his belt.

For some of us, it wasn't about color...I didn't vote for Obama because he was black...I voted for him because he was the BEST man for the job.

The fact that he happens to be African American...just icing on the cake, because I know a large amount of the African American populous felt extremely disenfranchised. I'm sure Obama's win rights that wrong!!

Nice post, Beth!

I agree...save this post for your children and grandchildren and their children. :)

It's called "character" ... Obama has it, you have it, your husband and your children have it -- and you've written some of the most powerful, beautiful words I think I have ever read on your blog. Brava!!

You are such a good person. I'm sad you have had to go through all this but I know it happens. I've seen it. I've heard it.

This post made me cry for several reasons - some of them with hope. Many of us chose hope yesterday! Now to get civil rights for all our citizens!

This post is excellent and so well-written! You make me proud to be your "aunt" and your fellow Dust Bunny! :-)

Hugs!!!

But how come all I've heard this morning on the TV is people saying "Yea! We have a black president! We've made history!" Is that why they voted for him? Because he is black? How 'bout saying "Yea! We have a GREAT man stepping in as president. I can't wait to see the changes he is going to make in this country." You are the only person, so far, that has said anything about changes, instead of just about color.

But I just started reading so maybe I'll find more!

These were powerful words you have written. It makes me sad that you and your family have had to endure these things because of the color of skin. I hope these kinds of things stop happening to you and anyone else for that matter. Things like these really piss me off though.

Blind as a bat, I loved it...although you do not know me...my mother is half creole and you cannot tell looking at me, and the Haitians here faint when they see I can understand them...to anonymous- who in office hasn't broken promises...some we just haven't heard about it.

You GO girlfriend!! I had tears in my eyes reading that post. The people have spoken...and I PRAY that our society is adult enough, mature enough, educated enough, open-minded enough to accept this man with open arms and NOT HATRED because of the color of his skin. That SCARES me the most...there are so many low life hillrods out there that can't see past color and refuse to accept change. God Bless America...and I sincerely pray that God blesses this President and his family. BJ

Great post Beth...we are really lucky to be alive in these times.
I voted for Obama because 1st I usually go for the Demo's...2nd because listening to him made sense. 3rd because when I saw how he treated his wife on stage I was impressed. You can tell he really loves her and his children.
And that's what is all about...Love conquers all!!

p.s. My sister lives in Harlem! :D

Nobody brought up race, or color until the waning days of the campaign. Republicans and Dems stayed far away from the subject for good reasons- one, it shouldn't be a factor in politics, and two- it would have showed both parties in a negative light. I'm sorry you've had some bad experiences, but the changes and gains that I have seen in my lifetime have been extraordinary, compared to the 100 years before I was born.. There will be change, but it ain't like throwing a light switch...

Powerful writing, very powerful Beth. All these "small incidents: are so indelible and painful and pile up to a mountain of woes. We attract wht we are...and by the responses you already have, you have collected a diverse loving extended family of thinking people.
Hey. speaking of prejudices...some of my best friends are smart.

This stuff you wrote is actually almost painful to read, can't imagine living it. My sister was engaged to a man who is Black who we all LOVE and was totally part of our family & they experienced a bit of this (mostly from his parents). My other sis is married to a Korean man so they experience a bit of this too. I must say though that it depends a bit on where you love b/c it is VERY taboo here to say anything negative or even mention somebody's race or skin colour.

Best post I have ever read Beth. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I know I forget these things sometimes. I grew up in the worst of times and often was grouped with the NL's because I had black friends. There was a black girl that I went to school with that really liked me but she was afraid to tell me because she was afraid of what might happen to her and I. That is so sad isn't it that you have to hide your feelings of love because of hatred. I liked her a lot too.
