I ended up back in the ER last night.
Not for me this time, but for my oldest boy.
It's MRSA.
How the hell do I get rid of this stuff? How can I keep the rest of my family from getting it?
I've cloroxed everything I can bleach, I've Lysoled everything I can spray....I have hand sanitizer in every room, and am constantly yelling at the boys, "CLEAN YOUR HANDS!"
Bud had 3 abscesses that were swollen and painful. He went to the dr. on Tuesday but he didn't drain them! (I think he was afraid)..gave him Augmentin and said if they get worse, he'd send him to a dermatologist. ?????
Well, by Friday, he wasn't any better, in fact, he was worse. so I just took him to the ER. Holiday weekend=no doctor in.
they cut him open, drained them, gave him a stronger antibiotic and vicodon (!!!!!) and we were home in 2 short hours. Poor baby. He about broke my hand squeezing it when they gave him the shot to numb it. That hurts like a B%$#@!!!
So, I'm off to the pharmacy....again...to get some stronger meds.
Has anyone had MRSA? How do I "contain" it? Does this mean he and I are more susceptible to getting it again?
Oh, and Happy 4th. woo. hoo.

We have yet to have that particular adventure yet.
I feel for getting medical attention over the fourth. My FIL was a doctor and many times he did impromptu surgery on the kitchen table for folks who needed it.
Hi Beth! George asked me to stop by and see if I could give you any advice about your bout with MRSA. I don't know if you know, but I'm a retired microbiologist, and believe me, we dealt with MRSA a LOT. Some of my coworkers even got abscesses, although we don't know if it was from working with it, or if they picked it up at home. It's a nasty bug, as you've discovered.
You're on the right track with hand sanitizer and handwashing--that's probably THE most important thing you can do. However, people can be carriers of MRSA, i.e., they can carry the bug without having an actual infection. The best advice I can give is to have your doctor test everyone to see if they are carriers--this is usually done with a nose culture--and then go from there. I'm not sure which antibiotic they give to stop someone from being a carrier, but for nursing home patients in the hospital, they usually had to have three negative cultures before they could be sent back to the nursing home, so you CAN eradicate it.
So I would ask your doctor to test you all for carrier status, and tell him you want to try to stop this constant re-infection. Keep in mind, though, that this bug is everywhere now, and there's no guarantee that you won't pick it up again elsewhere.
I hope this helps, and good luck!
All my best,
Beth (Nutwood Beth) :)
I just read what Beth said about folks being carriers on the Mayo Clinic site. Besides hand washing, they also recommend sanitizing linens and washing all athletic wear after each use.
Hope that bug goes away. Sometimes it takes awhile. Keep on top of those kids with the handwashing etc..
Gad Zooks! Sounds like you are doing what you can. Best of luck, babe.
Do a little research. There is a supplement called Allimax that is supposed to be potent against it. You can use it in addition to the antibiotics, I think.
Keep on the hand washing, etc. and I'd buy some protective gloves to have around, too--maybe use when handling dirty laundry, etc. May be overkill, but better than sharing the "wealth".
Yikes, y'all have a lot on your plate right now, huh?
Here's hoping the antibiotics kick in soon and wipe this out for everyone!!
*sigh* Aw Beth. That cant be good. Happy fourth to you too dear.
I recommend treating EVERY itch and skin irritation as potential staph, and cleansing and treating with antibiotics accordingly. And continue to wash up regularly and often, and to use hand sanitisers and plenty much soap...
In a situation like this, it certainly is NOT paranoia to get all MONK and OCD-ish on everyone. So go right ahead.
Awe...Sweet Hill family...MRSA is a nasty super bug that is highly out of control!! Keep doing the sterilizations as you are...keep on the high powered antibiotics...and keep on top of every little red area and bump that may creep up on your family. It's a sneaky, invasive, hard-to-tackle bacteria that no one is immune to!!! Get all family members tested and keep on top of things...that's the only good advise to be given. Prayers your way :0) Love to you all!! BJ
I swear TrannyBeth, you have had THE WORST luck lately. I wish there was something I could do to help you.
xoxoxoxoxoxo
I had an MRSA last year that took me 4 months and several rounds of antibiotics to get rid of--one of which I turned out to be allergic to, and woke up covered in hives from head to toe. Nasty stuff, I hope you find something that kicks it's a** fast.
We had students who had it, and they really worked on sanitizing the classrooms and rest of the school constantly. Sounds as if you got some good advice!
Enough already, right? Time for a good luck break!
I'm just wondering if the doc KNEW it was MRSA, and still didn't drain the sores? I'd be PISSED at him, and finding a new doctor, after giving him a piece of my mind.
ERs suck. Sorry you had to spend the 4th there. Hope your son gets better quickly!
I hope you all get better soon. I hope NC isn't to blame for this.
what the hell girl!
can dogs carry it or get it? keep them clean! sorry to hear it, my brother brought home scabies from trying on clothes at a vintage shop and my mom almost lost her mind.
godspeed!
So sorry to hear about your medical trials! Hoping it gets better soon.
Going into the hospital is as risky sometimes as not going... MRSA as described to me when my father was in his last weeks of life(he had it)that there was nothing they could do for him... This, I am sure, was because they knew, but couldn't say to us that he was dying. Call around, get another opinion or five- and don't take "no" or "we don't know" for an answer! The difference between you and a "professional" is that they get paid to know, not to care... get your money's worth, dammit!
Sending you my righteously pissed off attitude- use it as you see fit!
Lord, lady! That sucks big time. No MRSA advice, but I'm praying for y'all and sending good thoughts. Hopefully, things will turn around soon.
I am with the folks that advised getting your entire family tested. I have one girlfriend who is a carrier and treats all her skin stuff like its potentially life threatening... I would also, if you all have carriers in your home, get a referral to a infectious disease (ID) specialist and get on a preventative protocol.
Unfortunately, MRSA is on the rise. Its important to know if you carry it so you deal with it before it makes you sick.
Sorry, to hear you guys are so sick. And seriously, start waxing or using Nair. all of you
Oh Crap. I'm sending eradication vibes your way)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
My ex-General managers wife had MRSA for a few months. She was in the hospital and put on IV antibiotics and every thing. Just be careful. I'm sure the doctor told you if he runs a fever get him back in the ER ASAP!!!!!
