I rarely engage in talk or meals with my Dad (we went 6 years without speaking at all - my choice) but I did last week and survived. I hope you do as well.
Don't talk about politics or religion.
You can always gossip about members of the family that he doesn't care for.
When all else fails, talk about the weather.

Tranny: hmmm...politics might be good...he's a REPUBLICAN!,,shhhhhh, don't tell anyone I said that bad word. and he speaks to NO ONE in the family but me, and that's even rare...I'm sure I'll come away with some good stories anyway. :/
