meh

I've been sewing all day long. I had company tho, so it wasn't too bad. ;)

so I went through my drawers and found these shirts. They were old stained t-shirts and a sweater. the sweater will wait for another day.

I chose this white one cuz it was pretty big on me. I've never worn it...it sorta looks like a maternity top, if Im honest. But I thought it would be cute as a cardigan. Excuse the wrinkles!!

So I cut it down the middle!

I liked the colors of these shirts together, so I'd make my ruffles from these.

So I laid out the t-shirts and cut off the bottom hem. I didn't think they would ruffle up very good with the bottom hem on.

Then I cut each shirt into strips. I didn't measure anything...just "eye balled" it.

I did this to each of the 3 shirts.

This is the pile of strips I had when done

Then you open up one of the side seams, so you have one long strip.

Then you sew the strips together, according to color, with right sides together...making one veryyyy long strip.

Now here;s the trick...elastic thread. Take an empty bobbin and hand wind the elastic thread onto it. don't pull the elastic tight, just wind it on the bobbin with a normal tension in your hand. then load that bobbin into your machine. and just use any old cotton thread on top, through your needle.

Then on the right side of the fabric strip, sew down the middle. you can see that the elastic bobbin thread naturally ruffles the fabric strip!

I didn't think it was ruffled enough, so I sewed a second line, right beside the first one. this made the ruffle a little "tighter".

I did this to each of the colored strips of fabric. This is what I got when down...a pile of ruffles!

I took the blue one first, cuz I like blue!!! I pinned it all around the cut open edge of the shirt I wanted to make into a cardigan. I sewed it with a zigzag stitch, all around the edge.

I did this with each color of ruffle.

This is the finished product. mmmmmmm...not sure if I like it. I think there are too many ruffles...a little "over-kill" if you ask me. I probably should have just stopped at the blue ruffle, cuz to be honest.....I don't know if I'll ever really wear this! that's horrible, huh? :) Im gonna sit with it for a day or two...then maybe take a row of ruffles off. Or I might wear it with a tank underneath and see if I like it or not. It might be cute belted over the top of it too...Im gonna play around with it and see if I like it or not

This shouldn't take that much time to make. But it took me all freaking day cuz I had to load my bobbin FOUR freaking times! Pissed me off! I only had one open bobbin, so I had to stop and load it each time with the elastic thread. Take my word for it...load 3-4 at a time, so you can easily switch them out. I think I'd like it much better if it were just black and white too. this might be a little too...."preppy" for me. Not "hippie" enough for me. But it was fun to try!

I wish! This would get me voted off... "it looks a little 'home sewn' to me"

IDK, looks like if you work the sewing thing for a couple more months, you'll be standing in front of Nina Garcia! Wish I had your creativity. I'm in a freakin' rut these days.
