My kitchen is always freezing.
ALWAYS.
So we finally got a space heater the other day and it has a thermostat on it..blah blah blah,.
I woke up this morning and it was 58 degrees in the kitchen. FIFTY EIGHT. (no wonder my plants all die in the winter)
right now it's 68. I have it set for 71. it's only been 3 hours, so there's still time.

Could there be an area with no insulation, like the floor or a wall or ceiling? We used to have the same problem with a coat closet in our office - the back of it was ALWAYS icy to the touch. When we had the house resided, we found out why. The room had previously been a porch the previous owner enclosed... without filling the hole from the wood stove's exhaust pipe.
Kitchens (and particularly their floors) should have to be warm in the mornings. Should be a law.
I agree with WorkingMom - there IS a reason. But it will probably cost you to discover and correct it.
